When making my magazine, I will use a variation in different aspects of media language to hit the target demographic, 16-25 middle market aspirational audience, that the brief states we need to focus upon. A conglomerate company such has Hearst have a multitude of values which I will aspire to abide by. Reflecting the idea of industry context, Hearts mission statement is to ‘inform, entertain and inspire’ different audiences, including the 16-25 middle market aspirational audience. To abide by this mission statement, I will ensure that my magazine follows suit with the visually appealing nature of magazines revolving around Hearst such as ‘good housekeeping’. For the colour palette, I will base the colour palette off whatever topic area within each magazine I decide to focus upon. Each magazine will connote different meanings through different stylistic aspects. The main cover images on each magazine will both be central, featuring a male model on one magazine and a female model on the other. The female model will be featured on a feminist edition magazine, with her being 18 years old, almost evoking the entry into adulthood, and being a representation of females within an arguably patriarchal society. Conversely, my other magazine will be an LGBTQ+ edition magazine featuring a male around the same age representing the homosexual individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. The cover lines included in my magazine will consist of conventional topics such as fashion, beauty and horoscopes to reinforce consumerist ideologies regarding industry.
For my working website, I must ensure that I follow the common language conventions that correspond with websites regarding magazines, and I must incorporate them in a way that attracts the target audience of a 16-25 middle market aspirational audience. Conventions such as this include the logo required in the brief, the original title of my magazine and the menu bar which will entice audiences to click on the links presented. The links within my menu bar will direct audiences to topics such as ‘empowerment’ and ‘horoscopes’. I will also attempt to incorporate different media aspects such as social media within my website such as ‘Instagram’ to include interactivity within my website. I will ensure interactivity is included through features such as lightboxes and ‘subscribe now’ tabs. My website will contain two conventional pages, one being full of stories and digitally convergent ads, and one being an about us page, signalling the values of my magazine.
When creating a media product, it is vital to ensure that there is consistent branding across all media platforms. To achieve this, I will use the same models as well as the same logos in both my magazine and the online website. Relating to the idea of branding, I aspire to use similar typeface across both my products so that they correlate with one another and become easily recognisable to society. I plan to use serif fonts to highlight the key features in my products as fonts such as this are seen in lifestyle magazines such as ‘prima’ magazine. I will also use techniques to link both media products by including direction to the likes of my online website.
